Violet week in Italy from march 9th to march 16th wants to raise awareness about eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia, binge eating).

Part of that is a mail art call from the non-profit-organization il filo lilla.

Binge Eating Disorder

Binge eating disorder is characterized by recurrent binge eating episodes during which a person feels a loss of control and marked distress over his or her eating. Unlike bulimia nervosa, binge eating episodes are not followed by purging, excessive exercise or fasting. As a result, people with binge eating disorder often are overweight or obese.

Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia nervosa is characterized by binge eating (eating large amounts of food in a short time, along with the sense of a loss of control) followed by a type of behavior that compensates for the binge, such as purging (e.g., vomiting, excessive use of laxatives, or diuretics), fasting, and/or excessive exercise. Unlike anorexia nervosa, people with bulimia can fall within the normal range for their weight. But like people with anorexia, they often fear gaining weight, want desperately to lose weight, and are intensely unhappy with their body size and shape.

Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia nervosa is characterized by a significant and persistent reduction in food intake leading to extremely low body weight in the context of age, sex, and physical health; a relentless pursuit of thinness; a distortion of body image and intense fear of gaining weight; and extremely disturbed eating behavior. Many people with anorexia see themselves as overweight, even when they are starved or severely malnourished.

Poetry at Stanford

Wow, hat’s a surprise! A student sent us these screenshots from the library catalog of Stanford University with entries of four books of poetry by Gerald: Three are collections of poems:

  • Jedermann ist verdächtig (1992)
  • Die Lieder riechen nach Thymian (2014)
  • Keine Grenzen (Podium Porträt, 2017)

The fourth book is an anthology of Austrian poetry, titled Gedichte nach 1984, which was edited by Gerald Jatzek and Hansjörg Zauner (1959–2017). The two also wrote a play for radio together which blends two impressions of a surrealistic walk through Paris.

Drei Veröffentlichungen im Herbst

Die Wege, auf denen Texte und Lesende zusammenkommen, sind verschlungen: Innerhalb kurzer Zeit gab es Anfragen für zwei Bände mit Themen, die mit den Gedichten Gerald Jatzeks auf den ersten Blick kaum etwas zu tun haben.

In beiden Fällen haben die Autorinnen um die Rechte angefragt und die Texte für ihre Projekte umgehend und kostenlos erhalten.

Strickmonster

Eines der aus der Reihe fallenden Bücher ist Anton und das Strickmonster von Kirsten Orb. Kinder können damit gleichzeitig das Stricken lernen und eine Geschichte lesen. Wer mitmacht, kann am Ende sogar seine höchstpersönlichen Kuscheltiere herstellen.

Haiku-Sammlung

Die dritte Publikation ist eine Anthologie aus dem deutschen Kronach: Die Haiku-Sammlung “Natur schlägt zurück” wurde vom vielseitigen Ingo Cesaro als liebevoll gestalteter Band auf Werkdruckpapier mit Durchstichbindung im Japanblock herausgegeben.

Die Blumen des …

Beim Flower Power Festival München 2023 drehte sich alles um die Blüte, im wörtlichen, aber auch im übertragenen Sinn. Wissenschaft, Nachhaltigkeit, Pflanzenvielfalt, Gartenkunst, Klimawandel, Biodiversität, Ästhetik, Lebensqualität – aber auch Kunst, Musik und Literatur.

Das Floralia Mailart Projekt sammelte die Vereinigung Kunstrefugium neue Arbeiten zu Blüten, Blumen und Pflanzen. Viele Beiträge gingen von der Frage aus, was kann man dem naiven, die Realität verleugnenden Blick gegenüberstellen kann?

Gerald Jatzek steuerte die obenstehende Collage bei, in der die skurrile Geschichte eines Dämons erzählt wird, der arglose, blumenpflückende Menschen in München überfällt. Wer die Einzelheiten nachlesen möchte, kommt hier zu einer Vergrößerung des Bildes.

Ein Katalog

Mehr als 500 Einsendungen von fast 200 KünstlerInnen lieferte die Post bei den Veranstaltern ab. Im September 2023 wurden die Arbeiten im Kunsttreff in Moosach gezeigt.

Parallel dazu erschien ein 200-seitiger Katalog.

Fensterausstellung

Am 5.1.2024 veranstaltete das Kunstrefugium einen Neujahrsempfang, , bei dem die Einsendungen noch einmal gezeigt und auch verkauft wurden.

Letzte Chance

Die nicht verkauften Werke sind noch bis 31.1.2024 im Schaufenster in der Donauwörtherstraße 51, 80997 München, zu sehen. Während der Bürozeiten (Mittwoch 17 – 19 Uhr) können sie auch erworben werden. Alle Einnahmen gehen an Green City e.V.

A Multimedia Magazine from Spain

The Procedimentum is an annual publication edited by Pedro Pablo Gallardo Montero. Originally a print magazine, it has grown to many hundreds pages of text and illustrations plus a multimedia part. Nowadays you find the fascinating collection of visual poetry, art, music, video, secondary literature and everything inbetween at the beginning of the year on the webpage.

Oh, did I mention that the whole project is in Spanish. That may be an obstacle if you want to understand the essays on avant-garde music, but you can still listen to the music, visit the virtual exhibitions and watch the videos.

Mail Art Project

A part of the magazine is dedicated to the results of a mail art call for works dedicated to the work of the Italian sound artist Marta Zapparoli.

To the left of the magazine cover you can see the solutions by Juan Fran Núñez Parreño titled Música arcoíris and Gerald Jatzek’s The Breeze on your Face (after a composition by Marta Zapparoli).

The works on the right side are Saudade by Dona Mayoora and María Castillo’s bcEOrLDioNBa (entre Berlín y Córdoba).

Theater Experiences

This is a mail art call from Hungary, from the northeastern town of Miskolc, to be precise:

“The Spanish Flu Webjournal of Art, which will be celebrating its 20 th anniversary in 2024, the Hungarian Mail Art Society, the Herman Ottó Museum and its member institution the Miskolc Gallery are proud to organize the X. SpanishFlu International Mail Art Biennale titled Repertoire.

The event is an open exhibition, all participants are welcome.

The artworks are to be featured in a curated exhibition celebrating the bicentennial of theater in Miskolc, in manner that is appropriate to the tone and concept envisioned for the event by the organizers, which will be held in the Veres Attila Hall of the Thalia House of the Herman Ottó Museum – Miskolc Gallery on World Theater Day, 27 March, 2024.

In the spirit of World Theater Day, participants are expected to submit one or several artworks primarily related to their own theater experiences by using their own repertoire of experiences through the language of mail art and submit it by post. Alternatively, participants can also submit writings or films about the topic via e-mail.


Only artworks sent by mail that were specifically made for this occasion can be entered to the exhibition. We consider any bare two or three dimensional items or works of art wrapped in envelopes or any other kind of packaging that were sent via mail as mail art. We will display any piece that relates to the theme of the exhibition regardless of its shape, material and techniques used. Participants are encouraged to incorporate as many postal accessories and services (special stamps, priority and registered labels) as possible as organic decorative additions to their mail art submissions.


A curated exhibition based on the submissions will be held in the Thalia House of the Herman Ottó Museum – Miskolc Gallery until-August 2024. The exhibition opening will be documented via photographs and published by SpanishFlu.


The submitted pieces will become a part of the Marcelland International Art Collection. The SpanishFlu Mail Art Awards of Excellence will be awarded at the Biennale: The grand prize winner can host their own exhibition at the Thalia House in Miskolc during the following year while other awardees may do so in the webjournal.”

Make Art (Distribution) cheaper

Mailing and shipping prices are a drag for mail artists. Why? Because “one aspect that distinguishes the creative postal network from other artistic movements, schools or groups (including Fluxus) is the way it disregards and circumvents the commercial art market”. (Wikipedia)

Maya López Muro of the Il Graffiacielo Art Studio in Italy, César Reglero Campos of Taller del Sol in Spain and Ruggero Maggi who runs the Amazon Archive in Italy decided that it is time to do something about it.

They created – rather symbolically – the International Organization of Mail Artists (IOMA), and in September they started the project

In their call for participation they stated: “Our goal is to reach the ears of post offices and international shipping services in general with our appeal, since high shipping costs are substantially influencing our distance communication activity, which is why we urge maximum dissemination and participation of all artists to make our campaign efficient.”

Since then, artists in 28 countries have supported the claim with their signatures as well as withe their works. The image at the top of the page shows the poster for the show and the contributions of Gabriele Müller and Gerald Jatzek. If you happen to be near Florence or Arezzo over the weekend you may as well visit the exhibition:

El divertido día de los muertos

A la interpretación de calaveras había convocado el artista portugués Paulo Alexandre Rocha Teles alias BroTTas. Cómo se puede ver en su exposición en línea, este tema ha animado a muchos artistas, por ejemplo a Rudi Schreiber, Gabriele Müller y Irina Manu (de la izquierda a la derecha ).

Las festividades al inicio de noviembre fueron instituidas por la Iglesia católica en la Europa medieval: El 1 de noviembre para celebrar a Todos los Santos y el día 2 a los Fieles Difuntos.

En México, y en toda América Latina, El día de los Muertos se remonta a las celebraciones funerarias ancestrales mesoamericanas de las culturas prehispánicas. Para ellas, la muerte no era más que una etapa en la continuidad de la vida. Las calaveras y calacas de muchos colores juegan un papel destacado en estas fiestas. Menos conocido son las calaveritas literarias: versos y rimas pícaras o irónicos sobre vivos o muertos.

Nature in Istanbul

Sometimes, news travel slow even in the age of the internet. Only recently, we were informed about the exhibition Nature in Istanbul’s Bahariye Art Gallery which presented the collected contributions of Mengü Gezgins mail art call.

Among the works by more than 130 artists was Gerald Jatzek’s collage sea&land, based on a photo he had taken in Cuba some years ago.

The Fish in the Envelope

The other day, a fish stranded in the mailbox of Gabriele and Gerald. Not an average fish, of course, no swordfish, no trout, and no mackerel, but a FLUXfish. The strange animal had already visited Pam Chatfield, Mikel Untzilla, Rebekka Schmidt, Aina Enciso, Sabela Baña, Sil Dubois, and The Sticker Dude.

Gabriele and Gerald helped the fish to grow stronger and sent him to Italy (s. full scale image).

But as an add&pass-animal its destination will be the home of its primary creator, Coco Muchmore.

We are looking forward to hear from the FLUXfish.

Blue Tiles

The mail art call by the the Creative Experimental Laboratory of the Torre Social Centre of Padua invited artists to submit up to five works in the format size of 10 x 10 cm. While there was no restriction regarding themes or techniques, each work had to contain something in blue.

Maria Teresa Cazzaro used hundreds of square tiles to compose a large mosaic titles Un pezzetto di cielo senza confini (a piece of the sky without borders). The result was shown in an exhibition at the end of October.

On the right side you can see one of Gabriele Müller’s two contributions to the collective work of 256 artists, actually containing different shapes of blue.

The 2084 Imagined Futures​ from the South Program is an international initiative to occupy the future of Latin American cities. Among the participating institutions are Afroresistance (New York), Collectivo Artearte (Bogotá), Heroínas Peruanas, Freie Universität Berlin, Manzana de las Luces Museum (Buenos Aires) and The New School / Observatory on Latin America (New York).

They called on artists worldwide to send visual poetry from the year 2084 to present.

They explicitly asked for works in black and white with grayscale; maybe they were not too optimistic about the future. As you can see, Gerald Jatzek’s work is neither.

The Rabbitfish

This strange animal recently entered the house via the mailbox. The story goes that is has been bred by Melissa Wand from the FLUXfish group within the International Union of Mail-Artists (IUOMA).

The other side of the postcard is designed as a spade nine, formed by a school of spade fish.
