According to ancient Greek cosmogony, chaos (χάος) was the first being of the universe. For Heraclitus it was the very foundation of reality. Hesiod taught that Chaos was followed by Erebos (darkness), Eros, Gaia (earth), Tartarus (hell), and others.
The mathematician Edward Lorenz examined the chaos and realized that it isn’t as chaotic as it seems. Underlying the apparent randomness of chaotic complex systems, he found patterns which led to the theory of the deterministic chaos.
In everyday life, after all, the term is often understood to mean the absence of effective organization in human structures.
