Throughout history, flowers have been a favorite subject of artists. Eliana Santin asks mail artists to take a holistic approach. The Cambridge Dictionary defines holistic as “dealing with or treating the whole of something or someone and not just a part”.
The title of Elianas call is Blumen, the German word for flowers. She sees flowers as a metaphor for inner blossoming, free self-expression, and connection with the world around you. The title is a homage to Germany, the country where she was born.
Let’s support this approach with a German poem on the subject:
Under der linden
an der heide,
dâ unser zweier bette was,
dâ muget ir vinden
schône beide
gebrochen bluomen unde gras.
Vor dem walde in einem tal,
tandaradei,
schône sanc diu nahtegal.
Under the lime tree
On the heather,
Where we had shared a place of rest,
Still you may find there,
Lovely together,
Flowers crushed and grass down-pressed.
Beside the forest in the vale,
Tándaradéi,
Sweetly sang the nightingale.
Walther von der Vogelweide (ca. 1170-1230)
