Outsiders at the Pub

Blakes of The Hollow Bar by N. Chadwick

An international Exhibition in Northern Ireland

For many Central Europeans, Northern Ireland is a cultural terra incognita. The best-known aspect is probably the music, such as Phil Coulter’s song “The Town I loved so well“. (He also co-wrote “Puppet on a String” with Bill Martin. Sandy Shaw won the Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna in 1967 with this song.)

One of the persons that are about to change our ignorance is Deaborah Ríse, mixed media artist, fiction writer, and editor. She launched a mail art call that expresses the opposite of the current U.S. government’s view of humanity.

“Visual interpretations and ideas on the concept of ‘outsiders’ (whatever form that takes – culturally, socially, personally) in a world not designed for those who think, feel or present differently. For creators working towards inclusion and non-mainstream ideals.”

Using the results, she organized the first ever mail art exhibition in the town of Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, on an island in Lough Erne. The event took place in the “Blakes of the Hollow,” which is one of Ireland’s oldest and most well-known Victorian pubs.
